Objective
Tel Aviv University (TAU) and its partners are sponsoring NCAR to perform a preliminary evaluation of the NCAR RTFDDA numerical weather prediction (NWP) forecast system. The preliminary assessment will use the MM5-based RTFDDA system running over the region of Israel.
Description
Several tasks will be included in this preliminary study period. The MM5-based RTFDDA system developed by NCAR's Research Applications Laboratory (RAL)[hyperlink] will be set up and configured for the Israel region with 3 nested domains and the standard observations available in the region. The data assimilation system will be enhanced with additional observations from TAU and its partners covering the local region. The forecast model output will be provided both in a graphical web based image viewer and as files for further processing.
The system will run for approximately one month during which verification data will be collected and analyzed.
The results of this evaluation will be a report as well as an enhanced understanding of the meteorology of the region, the data sources available, the needs of the forecasters and users of an NWP system, as well as further understanding among the partners involved in this project.
