FAA Aviation Weather Research Program InFlight Icing PDT

The FAA’s AWRP supports research and development of aviation weather detection and forecast products. Their InFlight Icing Product Development Team, led by RAL scientists and engineers, is charged with conducting research to support guidance products for inflight icing conditions.
NASA ASAP

The goal of the Advanced Satellite Aviation Weather Program is to increase and optimize the usage of satellite data sets within the existing FAA PDT structure and to transfer advanced satellite expertise to the PDTs. ASAP enables collaboration between NASA and the FAA AWRP utilizing the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS) and the AWRP PDTs.
NASA NIRSS

The NASA Icing Remote Sensing System (NIRSS) deploys a vertically-pointing X-band radar, a lidar ceiliometer, and a profiling microwave radiometer to measure and diagnose local icing conditions. RAL is working with NASA to develop algorithms and data ingest and display software to provide a depiction of terminal-area icing conditions.
