Relevant information about this
radar page
The National Weather Service and Department of Defense operate 155 "next-generation
radar" (NEXRAD) sites, also known as Weather Surveillance Radar 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D).
Data from these radars are collected and derived products are distributed via
NIDS - NEXRAD Information Dissemination Service. The Radar link
above provides real-time imagery from each of the radars and a
Unidata national mosaic product. The images are
generally updated at 5-10 minute intervals depending on the mode of each radar.
The individual NEXRAD site graphics seen here were created by NCAR-RAP software
engineer Paddy McCarthy. The national mosaic product was created by Unidata's Steve
Chiswell.
Much more detailed information about how a weather radar works and how to
interpret images created from radar data can be found on a
NWS tutorial page.
The Research Applications Program of NCAR maintains a short archive of these
images via the interface on the radar page. As with all data/images on this series of web
pages, please read the disclaimer regarding data
availability.
Note: The link to images of lightning strike data is
accessible by .ucar.edu addresses only because these data are proprietary and
UCAR may not redistribute data or graphics to external users.
