RAL SEMINAR: Revolution Not Evolution: Assessing Climate Change and Embracing Rapid Technological Change. A Winter Road Maintenance Case Study
11:00 am – 12:00 pm MDT
Lee Chapman
Lee Chapman is Professor of Climate Resilience and Met Office Joint Chair at the University of Birmingham. A climatologist and engineer, his research examines how weather and climate affect the built environment, with particular expertise in urban climatology, infrastructure meteorology, climate adaptation and environmental monitoring. His work has led to commercial innovations in winter road maintenance and Internet of Things sensor technologies. He has received several awards for innovation and has contributed to all four UK Climate Change Risk Assessments.
In this presentation, Lee will discuss how UK winter road maintenance forecasting has evolved over the last 40 years and presents the case for a radical new approach. The talk is wide reaching and will cover aspects of Lee’s broader experiences in urban climatology, data densification, sensor design, autonomous vehicles and climate change risk assessment. The latter topics being related to ongoing work with NCAR colleagues as part of the bigger CLEETS global center initiative.
