The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has sponsored three Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment sites for the purpose of taking researched and developed connected vehicle technology out of the research realm and transitioned into transportation operations. (link: http://www.its.dot.gov/pilots/) The Wyoming site is unique from the other sites in that it is a large rural corridor (I-80) and weather plays a key role in the project.
NCAR’s Pikalert® system plays a central role in ingesting and processing weather and connected vehicle data from the pilot and producing both spot weather alerts for end-users and 72 hour forecasts of road weather conditions. The alerts and forecasts will be used in a variety of applications, including current Wyoming DOT operations, spot weather warnings for traveling connected vehicles, parking rerouting, and WYDOT traffic information messages.
