With the development of FastEddy, NCAR established itself as a leader in application of LES methodology to a range of atmospheric science topics. FastEddy enables more computing at lower cost and represents a giant leap forward in our ability to simulate flows in atmospheric boundary layers. The FastEddy model has enabled application of LES to areas previously beyond the reach of CPU-based codes. The GPU-based LES model provides the broader scientific community with a state-of-the-science capability for unprecedented, turbulence-resolving simulations to gain new insights in atmospheric boundary layer flows and to improve parameterizations of physical processes in large-scale models.
