Halaby Fellowship: A tribute to Najeeb Halaby’s legacy that builds on his contributions to aviation meteorology.

Clement Li is a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the guidance of Dr. John Hansman in the International Center for Air Transportation (ICAT). He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University and a Master’s Degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT. His research interests are in automated situation assessment, particularly situations characterized by stochasticity, including trajectory inference of airborne traffic and weather assessment under uncertainty. Other areas of research work include noise analysis for noise mitigation procedures around airports and the development of a cruise altitude and speed optimization decision support tool for the flight deck.

His research under the Halaby Fellowship includes developing methodologies and representations for reasoning over uncertainty in hazardous weather with respect to flight deck decision-making. This work involves characterizing weather uncertainty with respect to the future availability of safe options and new information, which enables a more informative assessment of risk for in-flight planning.
