Many of us walk or bike for a little bit longer to seek out shaded and cooler paths. Such experiences can be better understood and supported with the help of hyperlocal street-level urban microclimate modeling. Through his interdisciplinary Neutralizing Onerous Heat Effects on Active Transportation’ (NO-HEAT) Initiative, Prof. Rounaq Basu at Georgia Tech has developed a modeling workflow that supports public agencies and community organizations by providing data on street-level urban microclimate conditions. These have supported the identification of high-risk locations for targeted heat mitigation interventions and the ‘Cool Routes’ navigation app.

In this workshop, we will review the street-level urban microclimate modeling workflow developed by Prof. Basu’s research group. We will discuss the model components and input datasets with an eye towards exploring avenues for further scalability and generalizability. We will also ideate ways in which models developed at NCAR, such as WRF, HUMID, and FastEddy, can be incorporated to augment the microclimate modeling workflow. Participants are expected to actively contribute to the discussion and provide suggestions on avenues for longer-term collaboration. Registration is required. Register by June 25th
