The JNTP is working with operational agencies (e.g., the Air Force) through extensive pre-implementation tests. These tests are performed in a functionally-similar testing environment following the guidance of the sponsors. Performing objective evaluation of the test results, the JNTP then assists operational agencies in determining an appropriate configuration and data selections for operational implementation. The components to be tested are selected based on the ongoing testing results and consultation with sponsors. Some of tests performed by the JNTP include, but are not limited to,
- Cycling versus cold-start of data-assimilation and forecasts
- Background error generation and tuning
- Data assimilation technique and system comparison (e.g., ensemble versus variational, etc)
- Data selections for operational implementation (surface, radiance, ozone, etc)
- Operational real-time case investigation and mitigation support
- Others
Some testing results for the Air Force can be found at the DTC T&E website
