Working to develop and validate improved WRF PBL parameterization for complex terrain.
The goal of this project is to develop and validate new modeling capabilities for high-resolution mesoscale flow simulations over complex terrain with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) – Advanced Research WRF (ARW). We will conduct research in collaboration with the Vaisala team. WRF model development will include implementation and validation of the Immersed Boundary Method for mesoscale simulations in WRF-ARW model and modification of a selected planetary boundary layer parameterization in WRF-ARW to enhance wind forecasting skill in complex terrain. WRF-ARW mesoscale simulations will be validated by comparing to data collected by the Vaisala team during the planned observational campaign in the Columbia River Gorge.
