FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT:

Since 1980, the Penn State/NCAR mesoscale model has been developed into a research and operational meteorological modeling system that is used and recognized worldwide. A large fraction of this development work has been accomplished at Penn State under the direction of T. Warner. The following statistics serve to emphasize the growth of this facility in the last decade, and the degree to which it represents a national and international research tool.

• Over 90 students have used the modeling system during their M.S. and Ph.D. research (1980-2011).

• Over 25 university, government and private facilities in the United States utilize the modeling system (1980-2011) (e.g., Colorado State University, General Motors Research Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, NASA Ames Research Center).

• Over 20 research laboratories outside of the United States employ the modeling system (1980-2011) (e.g., University of Lanzhou, People's Republic of China; University of Cologne, Germany; Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Norway; Tel Aviv University, Israel).

• Over 100 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals have resulted from the model's use in and outside of the U.S. (1980-2011).

• The model is used for real-time weather prediction at Penn State, and the forecasts are archived in real-time at NCAR for use by the academic and research community nationwide. At Penn State, the forecasts are used for research, teaching and public service (1989-2011).
