Olga Wilhelmi, PhD, has joined the prestigious ranks of AMS fellows. Olga is a geographer with twenty years of experience working at the interface of atmospheric and social sciences and GIS. She is the Head of the GIS Program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and is a Project Scientist for Research Application Laboratory. Her research interests span a wide range of topics in the weather, climate, and society interactions, with the emphasis on societal risk, vulnerability and adaptive capacity to extreme weather events and climate change. Olga’s current work focuses on extreme heat and human health, coastal resilience, and the role of geovisualizations in weather risk communication. She uses GIS, spatial analysis, and mixed-method approaches to understand the complex interactions between extreme heat, air quality and human health, urban food-water-energy nexus, and visual risk communication of coastal hazards.
