Rajesh Kumar wins the Baron Nicolet Prize

RAL's Deputy Director honored for his contribution to Aeoronomy

Rajesh Kumar

Congratulations to Rajesh Kumar who was awarded the prestigious Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences "Baron Nicolet Prize for the 13th biennial period" (2022-2023). The ceremony will be held on 14th Dec when his award will be bestowed.

The Baron Nicolet Prize for Aeronomy is an award presented by the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences, specifically under the auspices of the Académie Royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium). This very highly respected prize is named in honor of the renowned Belgian scientist Baron Marcel Nicolet (1912-1996), a distinguished figure in the field of aeronomy—the study of the upper atmosphere of the Earth and other planets, including phenomena like ionospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, and the behavior of the upper layers of the atmosphere under the influence of solar and cosmic radiation.

The prize recognizes and rewards outstanding contributions in the field of aeronomy, promoting research that enhances our understanding of the Earth's atmosphere and its interactions with space. The prize may be awarded for a significant body of work, a specific breakthrough, or continuous contributions in the field.

The award highlights Belgium’s proud tradition in atmospheric sciences, reflecting the legacy of Baron Nicolet, who was instrumental in advancing the understanding of the Earth’s upper atmosphere through his pioneering work in aeronomy. Recipients of the prize are often individuals or teams who have made exceptional contributions to this scientific domain, thereby honoring Baron Nicolet's legacy and continuing Belgium’s prominence in atmospheric and space sciences.

We are so proud of Rajesh's accomplishments, and this prize is further validation of his extraordinary work.
